The first animal member of the circus is Jacques, a talking horse. Jacques is very intelligent and articulate and values a good conversation. He knows he’s a horse but he prefers the company of humans and sees himself as part of the circus family and not as one of the other horses in the circus. His best friend is Argider and Jacques took on the role of being his voice. In the show he serves all kind of roles. His main act is to be Argiders assistant but he also lets Aristide performs tricks on his back. Aristide and Argider are the only ones he allows to ride on his back, making only occasional exceptions for Zazie or Vivienne. He hates saddles and headgears and refuses to wear them.
Jacques once was a successful race horse but when it was discovered that’s he can speak people thought he was possessed and decided to kill him. Aristide heard about this and decided to save him. At first he wanted to buy Jacques from his owner but was chased away and cursed at so he and Argider went ahead and stole Jacques. Jacques does not remember how he and why he is able to talk. Aristide later found out that Jacques was originally a human. He was the owner of a priced white racing steed but a jealous rival paid a witch so she would put a curse on the horse to prevent it from winning. That curse, however, went wrong and lead to the man, who was at the stables as it took place, being fused with his horse. At first he didn’t speak, having forgotten everything about his human life, and he was presumed missing so his rival took the horse for himself. Aristide offered to tell Jacques what he found but he Jacques refused knowing it would only bring him sorrow.
